Deleted a photo on Android? It may still be on your phone for 30 days
When you delete a photo on Android, it usually is not gone. Most gallery apps move it to a trash or recycle bin first, so you can change your mind. That is useful when you delete something by mistake. It is a problem when you are trying to make a private photo disappear.
Google Photos: 30 days
Google Photos keeps deleted photos and videos in its trash for 30 days (Google Photos Help). That applies to photos backed up to your Google Account, and to photos deleted from a phone running Android 11 or later without backup.
Until September 2026, backed-up photos stayed in the trash for 60 days. Google shortened it to 30 (Android Authority), so older guides may still say 60.
To empty it: open Google Photos, find Trash in your library, and empty it. Google warns that emptying the trash permanently deletes everything in it, and nothing can be restored.
One more thing to check: if the photo was backed up, it may still be in your Google Photos library in the cloud. Make sure you deleted it from your account, not only from your phone.
Samsung Gallery: 30 days, if the Recycle bin is on
Samsung Gallery has a Recycle bin that keeps deleted images and videos for 30 days before they are deleted forever (Samsung). It only works if the Recycle bin was turned on before you deleted the photo.
To empty it: open Gallery, open the menu, choose Recycle bin, then empty it.
Other gallery apps
Many other gallery apps, including those from phone makers like Xiaomi, OnePlus and Oppo, have a similar recently deleted album. Look for “Trash”, “Recycle bin” or “Recently deleted” in your gallery’s menu.
Moving photos into a vault? Check the trash afterwards
When you move a private photo into a vault app, the original in your gallery has to be deleted. Depending on how the app and your gallery handle that, the original can land in the trash and stay there for weeks.
So after moving photos into any vault, including Google Photos Locked Folder, Samsung Secure Folder or an app like Lockspeare:
- Open your gallery’s trash and empty it.
- If you use a cloud photo backup, check that the photo is gone from it too.
- Check messaging apps where you sent or received the photo, since they often keep their own copies.
Lockspeare reminds you to do this after every import, because the trash is the most common place private photos are left behind.
